Orofacial Myofunctional Pre-Orthodontics
Guiding healthy jaw development through early intervention and functional growth.
About this service
Orofacial Myofunctional Pre-Orthodontics is an early intervention programme that encourages healthy jaw growth, proper facial development, and optimal oral function during childhood. By addressing functional issues before they become structural problems, we help create the foundation for healthier breathing, improved development, and lifelong oral health.
At Sovereign Dental, our clinicians follow the evidence-based Myofocus™ Protocols and Take Off Algorithm to assess and treat orofacial dysfunctions. Every programme is tailored to each patient's unique needs using targeted exercises, specialised therapy tools, and regular progress assessments.
Treatment is individually customised for children and adults, with programmes typically spanning at least eight weeks. Each session builds on the previous one, gradually retraining muscle memory and creating lasting improvements in oral function, facial development, and overall health.

Early Intervention for Growing Children
Children experience rapid jaw and facial growth during their early years, making this the ideal time to guide healthy development. Early assessment allows us to identify functional issues before they contribute to permanent structural changes.
By working with natural growth patterns, we can often minimise future orthodontic problems and support healthier facial development.
Supporting Healthy Jaw Development
Proper jaw growth depends on healthy muscle function and correct oral habits. Mouth breathing, tongue ties, poor tongue posture, and abnormal swallowing patterns can all influence jaw development, resulting in narrow dental arches, crowded teeth, and bite problems.
Our treatment focuses on correcting these underlying functional issues to encourage balanced jaw growth and improved oral health.
Reducing Future Orthodontic Treatment
Early intervention can significantly reduce the complexity of future orthodontic treatment. By encouraging proper jaw growth and creating adequate space for adult teeth, many children may avoid unnecessary tooth extractions or lengthy orthodontic treatment later.
Our approach focuses on guiding development rather than simply correcting problems after they occur.
A Collaborative Approach to Child Development
Children benefit most when treatment addresses the whole child—not just their teeth. Our dentists work closely with orofacial myofunctional therapists and, when appropriate, collaborate with paediatricians, ENT specialists, sleep physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, nutritionists, orthodontists, and other healthcare professionals.
This multidisciplinary approach supports healthy breathing, sleeping, eating, speech, and overall development while creating the best possible foundation for lifelong oral health.
