Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Restoring balance through muscle function.
About this service
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a specialised programme designed to retrain the muscles of the face, mouth, and throat. By addressing the root causes of dysfunction, we restore harmony to your entire orofacial system.
At Sovereign Dental & Myofunctional Centre, our therapists use evidence-based techniques to assess and correct patterns of muscle use that contribute to breathing disorders, speech difficulties, swallowing problems, and poor facial development.
Therapy is tailored to every patient — from newborns experiencing feeding difficulties to adults managing sleep-disordered breathing. Each session builds on the last, progressively retraining muscle memory for lasting results.

Addressing root causes, not just symptoms
At Sovereign Dental, we prioritise addressing the root causes of jaw joint dysfunction — including clicking, popping, or a locked jaw — rather than managing surface-level symptoms. These issues often stem from dislocated or damaged discs, teeth grinding, or clenching, and require more than a temporary fix.
While conventional treatments may offer oral splints or guards to prevent further tooth wear, we view these as starting points rather than endpoints. Each device we craft is meticulously designed around the specific dysfunction of the individual — not a one-size-fits-all solution.
The role of orofacial myofunctional therapy
Mechanical treatments alone rarely resolve the full picture. Orofacial myofunctional factors — including tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, tongue tie, and atypical swallowing habits — can contribute significantly to jaw joint dysfunction.
Integrating myofunctional therapy into the treatment plan allows us to retrain the underlying muscle patterns that perpetuate dysfunction, supporting lasting joint health rather than symptomatic relief.
A multidisciplinary team approach
Our team at Sovereign Dental includes dentists and orofacial myofunctional therapists who collaborate closely to assess and manage each patient. For complex cases, involvement from body workers — such as osteopaths, chiropractors, or physiotherapists — may also be necessary to address broader structural or functional contributors.
Jaw joint issues can sometimes arise as compensatory mechanisms originating from other parts of the body. We take the time to determine whether the problem originates at the joint itself, or elsewhere, so we can tailor management accordingly.
Long-term joint health as the goal
By focusing on identifying and managing root causes, we aim not only to alleviate immediate symptoms but to promote long-term joint health and overall well-being. This holistic approach ensures each patient receives personalised care that addresses their specific needs — leading to effective and sustainable outcomes.
Our commitment is to go beyond symptomatic relief and tackle the underlying factors driving jaw joint dysfunction. Through careful evaluation, personalised treatment, and coordinated care, we strive to support optimal jaw health and functional well-being for every patient we see.
