Dentofacial Orthopaedics
About this service
Dentofacial Orthopaedics focuses on guiding jaw growth and correcting structural deficiencies that affect breathing, facial development, and oral function. Using customised jaw expansion appliances alongside functional therapy, we create the space needed for healthy development while supporting long-term oral health and overall wellbeing.
At Sovereign Dental, we provide personalised dentofacial orthopaedic treatment for patients with significantly narrowed jaws, restricted tongue space, airway concerns, and developing bite problems. Every treatment plan is tailored to each patient's unique anatomy, growth stage, and functional needs.
Our comprehensive approach combines custom-made jaw expansion appliances with Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy to improve both jaw structure and muscle function. By treating the underlying cause rather than simply correcting the symptoms, we help create healthier, more stable outcomes that often reduce the need for complex orthodontic treatment in the future.

Personalised Jaw Expansion
Some patients require more than functional therapy alone to achieve healthy jaw development. For significantly narrowed jaws, we utilise custom-made removable expansion appliances such as the Biobloc 1 to gradually widen the jaws and create adequate space for the tongue and developing teeth.
Each appliance is individually designed to provide controlled expansion while allowing patients to maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout treatment.
Supporting Healthy Airway Development
A narrow jaw can reduce tongue space and contribute to airway obstruction, mouth breathing, snoring, and sleep-disordered breathing. Expanding the jaws can improve tongue posture, create a healthier airway, and promote more efficient breathing during both the day and night.
Treatment is carefully planned according to each patient's stage of growth and biological response to ensure predictable and long-lasting results.
Combining Structure with Function
While jaw expansion improves skeletal development, healthy muscle function is equally important for maintaining long-term results. Throughout treatment, we integrate Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy to improve tongue posture, breathing, swallowing, and facial muscle coordination.
This combination of structural and functional care provides a more comprehensive approach than expansion alone, helping create stable and lasting outcomes.
Comprehensive, Individualised Care
Every patient responds differently to jaw development therapy. The active expansion phase typically lasts around six months but may vary depending on individual growth and biological response. Our team carefully monitors progress and adjusts treatment to ensure the best possible outcome.
By combining advanced dentofacial orthopaedics with personalised care, we help improve oral function, facial development, airway health, and overall wellbeing.
